Testing your own AI is quality control. Assurance is something else.

Most AI vendors serving associations and nonprofits now test their products. That is the minimum a buyer should expect, and the teams doing it well deserve credit.
But testing and assurance answer different questions. The difference matters to the people who have to stand behind a purchase.
Testing asks: does this work the way we intended? The vendor writes the test cases, decides what a good answer looks like, runs the checks and reads the results. Evaluation and observability platforms make that faster and more rigorous. They are built for the team that owns the system, and they do that job well.
Assurance asks: can someone who did not build this, and does not profit from it, show that it behaves as claimed? That is a different job, done by a different party.
Financial audit offers a useful comparison. A finance team with strong internal controls still gets audited. Nobody doubts the team. The people who rely on the statements simply cannot rely on the preparer alone.
Why this matters to your organization
Your members and donors are already asking how you use AI. A vendor's own test results are a reasonable answer for your IT lead. They are a thin answer for a board, a funder or a member, because none of them can see what was tested or who chose it.
Disclosure on its own is an admission. Disclosure backed by independent assurance is a claim of competence. The sentence is the same and the effect is the opposite.
What independent assurance adds
- A different author. Someone with no stake in the result chooses what to test.
- An outside view. The product is tested the way your members meet it, without access to the vendor's internals.
- A result that can be refused. An assessment that can only pass is a marketing exercise. A result that can come back Red, or Not rated, means something when it comes back Green.
Where Cimbiotic fits
CimAssure tests chatbots and agents from the outside against a versioned test library and reports an Assurance Statement of Green, Amber, Red or Not rated. Chatbot and agent testing are both available now. CimAssure is not a certification, audit or attestation. Cimbiotic is aligning to ISO/IEC 17065 and is not currently accredited.
